SAN FRANCISCO — Rapid reactions from the Red Sox’ 9-5 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park:
1) Errors continue to haunt the Red Sox, who seem to commit them at the least opportune times. In the third inning, a pop-up dropped in between back-pedaling third baseman Nate Eaton and charging left fielder Jarren Duran. The two collided in pursuit and a ball dropped in, with Duran charged with an error. Two runs scored in the inning, both of them unearned. That added to the number of unearned runs allowed by the Sox this season. But the biggest miscue came in the seventh when Romy Gonzalez dropped a line drive hit directly to him, leading to three more unearned runs.
2) Alex Cora regards Rob Refsnyder and Romy Gonzalez as his lefty killers and both came up big Sunday. Slotted in as the DH and leadoff hitter with Robbie Ray on the mound, Refsnyder cracked a two-run homer to left center in the fifth, scoring Eaton ahead of him. It was the fifth homer of the season for Refsnyder, four of which have come against lefties. Two batters later, Gonzalez followed suit with a shot of his own to left-center for only his second homer of the season.
3) Ceddanne Rafaela is in full bloom at the plate. He doubled in the fourth and added a solo homer in the sixth, breaking what was then a 4-4 tie. For the series, he had five hits — four of them for extra bases with two doubles and two homers. As with most of the damage he’s been doing at the plate, the home run was pulled — something the Red Sox have been advising him to focus on.
4) Third base coach Kyle Hudson is usually spot-on with his decisions to either send or hold runners at third base. In the third inning, his usual good judgment seemed to be missing. With Abraham Toro on first base, Rafaela ripped a double into the right field corner and Hudson made the call to send Toro home. The relay to Patrick Bailey had the Giants catcher waiting to apply the tag on Toro. Toro attempted to hop past Bailey, but was immediately called out for going out of the base line by home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski.
5) Starter Lucas Giolito turned in a strong outing, even though the box score shows that he allowed four runs. Just two of them were earned, however, as the first two came after an error in the third. He faced the minimum number of hitters in four of his six innings. He’s now given the Red Sox six or more innings with two earned runs allowed or fewer in each of his last three outings.
6) Entering Sunday, the Red Sox’ bullpen had strung together 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings, and the end of that streak came at a bad time for the team. Greg Weissert took over for Giolito and quickly allowed two hits, giving the Giants runners at second and third. After getting Patrick Bailey on a comebacker, the Giants pushed a run across on a sacrifice bunt, ending the string at exactly 20 innings.
7) Duran plays the game hard at all times, and is constantly looking for ways to take an extra base. But trailing by three in the eighth, Duran hit a rope to right and had his mind set on second the whole time. He (barely) beat the throw from Mike Yastrzemski at second, but his finger tip was off the bag and he was ruled out — a call the Sox appealed, lost and saw Duran and Cora ejected for arguing.
8) The Red Sox road trip continues Monday with a change in venue, as the team heads to southern California. In the first of three at Angel Stadium Monday night, it will be RHP Walker Buehler (5-5, 5.95) matched up against RHP Jack Kochanowicz (3-8, 5.38) of the Los Angeles Angels at 9:38 ET.
