Alex Cora Gives Timeline on Jordan Hicks’ Red Sox Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Since the Rafael Devers trade disrupted the fragile balance in the Major League landscape, not a single member of the new foursome that landed with the Boston Red Sox as a result of the highly controversial swap has made their debut. Now, we have a timeline for at least one.

Veteran righty Jordan Hicks was shut own due to toe inflammation in early June and is nearing his return. Hicks, who had been a starter for the San Franciso Giants, will be moved to the bullpen, affecting his timeline. Cora explained that his role change had moved up his return date, saying this:
“I mean, obviously the role is different. We don’t have to build him up, but we have to respect the injury, and obviously the arm, that’s the most important thing. So, we’ll see how he feels, and we’re not putting pressure on him. Hey, ‘You’ve got to be here on Friday.’ Whenever he’s ready, he’s ready.”

When pressed on the Friday remark, Cora replied, “There’s a good chance.” Hicks took his first step towards his Red Sox debut on Sunday, throwing his first rehab outing. In just two-thirds of an inning, Hicks gave up two runs on two singles, a walk and a home run. In 23 pitches total, he threw 10 strikes.

Prior to his injury, Hicks owned a 6.47 ERA in nine starts and four relief appearances on the year. Despite his lack of success, the Red Sox are enamored with his potential. In his last year as a full-time reliever (2023), Hicks threw to a 3.29 ERA. His heater, which can top triple-digits, might also be a weapon out of the bullpen.
