LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Athletics have broken ground on their new home on the Las Vegas Strip.
“All of us at Major League Baseball, all the owners, are excited to be adding major league baseball to the entertainment alternatives that are available here in Southern Nevada,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred during Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony.
The ballpark will rise from the site where the Tropicana once stood.
“The opportunity to have the A’s in Las Vegas, to have Major League Baseball in Las Vegas, and to have it happen on such an iconic corner. It’s just such a great opportunity for Las Vegas,” said LVCVA President Steve Hill.
The ceremony included some of the franchises greats like Rollie Fingers who was part of the “Swingin A’s” dynasty in the 1970’s and is now a Las Vegas resident.
“When I found out that the A’s were coming here, I was pretty excited. I know it’s going to be three years before we get here. They’re playing in Sacramento right now and the teams a little shaky but it can change in a hurry. We were a little shaky in ’28 when I came and we were in the World Series two years later. It can happen in a hurry,” said the Athletics’ legend.
As one of the original 16 teams in professional baseball, the Athletics are a storied franchise that has impacted each city they have called home – from Philadelphia to Kansas City, to Oakland and now Las Vegas.
“The Athletics have a long and proud history. I think of today as the beginning of a new chapter in that great history,” said Manfred.
The Athletics are expected to begin playing in Las Vegas in the 2028 season.
