CASTRO COUNTY, Texas — The Texas Rangers are investigating an officer involved shooting in Castro County.

The shooting happened around 11:00 a.m. when a Castro County Sheriff’s Office Deputy responded to a person trespassing on a home at FM Road 1055.

The deputy then located the suspect, Lierme Reyes, 34, and gunfire was exchanged between Reyes and the deputy.

According to the Texas Municipal Police Association, a Castro County deputy was shot in the line of duty. But the round did not penetrate his bullet proof vest.

According to DPS, both Reyes and the officer were injured during the shooting and taken to a local hospital.

Reyes died at the hospital from his injuries, and the deputy is currently recovering.

DPS says the deputy was placed on administrative leave.

“This is another stark reminder of the danger Texas law enforcement faces daily—one second, one shot, one heartbeat away from tragedy,” said TMPA.
