After scoring 61 runs during their 10-game homestand, the Dodgers start a road trip on Tuesday night against the Rockies at Coors Field in Denver.
During said homestand the Dodgers stole only two bases, both in the same game. Mookie Betts and Max Muncy each stole second base against Dylan Cease on June 16. For the month of June the Dodgers have stolen only six bases — two each by Muncy and Hyeseong Kim, and one apiece for Betts and Tommy Edman.
On the season the Dodgers have stolen 44 bases, well below the league average of 57 per team to this point. Their 77.2-percent success rate is right in line with the league’s 76.8-percent mark.
Through 79 games last year the Dodgers stole 48 bases, but the difference between then and now is almost entirely due to Shohei Ohtani dialing it back a bit on the bases. Ohtani last year through 79 games had 16 steals and was just about to ramp things up, on his way to 59 stolen bases. This year he’s slowed things down considerably while working his way back to the mound, and has 11 steals, which still leads the team. His last attempted steal was May 23.
The non-Ohtani Dodgers stole 32 bases by this point last season and are at 33 steals now.
In the series opener in Colorado, they’ll face Germán Márquez, who has allowed 16 steals in 18 attempts in his 15 starts this season. His 16 steals allowed are tied for fourth-most in the majors, and he’s allowed 13 steals over his last seven starts.
As a team, the Rockies have allowed 80 steals through 78 games, third-most in the majors so far. When these two teams met in Los Angeles two months ago, the Dodgers stole two bases in three attempts during the three games. One of those steals was on April 16, a game started by Márquez, only he was already out of the game by then having allowed seven runs in the first inning.
