Trade Idea Sends Red Sox Jarren Duran to Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Boston Red Sox already made the blockbuster trade of the Major League Baseball season when they sent superstar Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. But, they likely aren’t done making moves as trade talks heat up and we near the deadline.

MLB analyst Griffin Giess posed the idea of the Red Sox sending centerfielder Jarren Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for three prospects, including catcher Eduardo Tait, infielder Aroon Escobar, and pitcher Wen-Hui Pan.
Giess laid out multiple reasons why this benefits both sides. The Phillies are in obvious need of outfield help, and it would allow the Red Sox to give their young outfielders full-time play.
Giess mentions that Duran would give the Phillies the two-way centerfielder they’ve been searching for, and it would be at a buy-low price.
Duran had a breakout season in 2024, hitting .285 with an .834 OPS and led the American League with 48 doubles and 14 triples. The Red Sox centerfielder also won the All-Star Game MVP.
However, he’s taken a slight step back in 2025, hitting just .257 with a .714 OPS. Giess did mention that Duran is still hitting the ball hard and suggested his production against fastballs should increase based on xStats. A change of scenery may be exactly what Duran needs to get back to his 2024 production.

On the flip side, the Red Sox would get three young prospects in return, including the top catching prospect (No. 9 via MLB Pipeline) in all of baseball.
In addition, the Red Sox would acquire Escobar, who’s hitting .295 with an .853 OPS, .401wOBA, and 137 wRC+ in single-A. Escobar has also walked 93 times on the season, just four fewer than his strikeout total.
Lastly, the Red Sox would get Pan, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, but Giess believes he could pitch at the Major League level as soon as 2026.
This proposed trade would allow the Red Sox to give Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu every day starts in the outfield, and the Phillies would solve a big outfield issue.

Duran’s contract only pays $3.85 million in 2025, with a club option of $8 million next season. After that, the team could buy him out for $100,000 and have control through the 2029 season.

With the trade, the Phillies would have their centerfielder for the future, and the Red Sox could give their young outfield trio the keys to everyday playing time.
