Kansas baseball coach Dan Fitzgerald previews next Big 12 series
Here’s what Kansas baseball coach Dan Fitzgerald had to say Wednesday as the Jayhawks continued to make their way through the 2025 season.
LAWRENCE — Kansas baseball bounced back Tuesday, with a win on the road against rival Missouri during non-conference play.
The victory ended what had become a three-game losing streak for the Jayhawks, after they were swept last weekend at home by Cincinnati during Big 12 Conference play. It set them up with some momentum, ahead of a Big 12 series against BYU this week at home— set to be played Thursday through Saturday.
And ahead of this series against BYU, KU could boast of a 37-13 overall record and 15-9 mark against the Big 12 that has coach Dan Fitzgerald’s squad in contention for an important top-four seed in the conference tournament.
But looking ahead past the Big 12 tournament, how does Kansas’ potential NCAA tournament status look? Could the Jayhawks be on their way to their first NCAA regional since 2014? If so, which regional might KU end up in?
Here are a few recent projections for where Kansas would be in the 64-team field:
This would place Kansas as the No. 3 seed in a regional hosted by Arkansas, the No. 1 seed in the four-team region. The region would also feature No. 2-seed Miami and No. 4-seed George Mason. The Jayhawks appear to be safely in with this projection, but a strong end to the regular season would do a lot to solidify their position.
This would also place Kansas as a No. 3 seed in a four-team regional hosted by Arkansas, the No. 1 seed in the region. The region would also feature No. 2-seed Dallas Baptist and No. 4-seed Missouri State. This would be a reunion of sorts for Fitzgerald, who served a stint as an assistant coach at Dallas Baptist earlier in his coaching career.
This would place Kansas as a No. 3 seed, too, but instead in a four-team regional hosted by LSU, the No. 1 seed in the region. The region would also feature No. 2-seed NC State and No. 4-seed Long Island. This would also be a reunion of sorts for Fitzgerald, as a stint as an assistant coach at LSU came in between his time as an assistant at Dallas Baptist and before he started his run as the head coach at KU.
