Washington beat the San Diego Padres 10-6 at San Diego Monday night. At press time, the Padres were in third place in the NL West, 5.5 games back.

The Tampa Bay Rays, having won seven of their last 10 games, had cut the New York Yankees’ lead in the American League East to two games. The Yankees had lost seven of their last 10 at press time.

The skidding New York Mets had dropped nine of their last 10 at press time and had fallen 1.5 games back of first-place Philadelphia in the NL East.

The Dodgers were to begin a three-game series at Colorado Tuesday. The Angels were to resume their series against the Red Sox, and the Padres were to resume their series against the Nationals.Â
