Burlington freshman Cohen Schroeder tossed a no-hitter in a 15-0 Southeast Conference game the last time Burlington and Keokuk high school baseball teams met.
That was June 5 at Wayne Duke Field.
Monday at Joyce Park in the first game of a double header in Keokuk, Schroeder and Keokuk pitcher Lucas Gilpan each allowed four hits. Schroeder got the win in a much tighter game than the 15-0 June 5 win. The Grayhounds eked out a 5-2 thriller.
Schroeder walked one, hit one and fanned eight over five and two-thirds innings. Dylan Chenowith threw the last four outs.
Burlington won the second game 21-0 on 10 hits, two hit batters and 12 walks Four of the hits were doubles as Schroeder, Radek Paslawski, Evan Hecox and Ian Mason each hit one.
Schroeder had five RBIs while Mason, Hecox and Chenoweth had three RBIs each.
The improvement in the Keokuk Chiefs, with a 1-16 record and 0-11 in the league, to play Burlington, 15-6, 11-0 in the SEC, a 5-2 game was what stood out on the night.
Lucas Gilpan threw six innings for Keokuk.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever been prouder of a team,” Keokuk coach Steve Worster said. “Lucas was fantastic on the mound. We made plays behind him. We battled.”
Gilpan gave up two hits in the first inning when BHS scored its first run. He gave up two walks, a hit, a sacrifice and hit a batter in the third inning when the Grayhounds made it a 4-0 game. Hecox’s hit brought in two runs for BHS.
Keokuk answered in the bottom of the third which started with two strikeouts for Schroeder. Lincoln Wray’s triple to the deepest part of center field was followed by Mason Claus’ RBI-single. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases and a balk scored a run.
Gilpan faced just three batters in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Keokuk threatened again in the sixth inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Zach Nemecek singled and Darren Roberts, courtesy runner for catcher Memphis Anderson who had singled, was sent home on the play and thrown out.
“I’ve told the kids that coaches make mistakes too,” Worster said. “I was brain dead sending him home. We had the top of the lineup coming up to bat.”
Micah Hagge threw the seventh inning and gave up an unearned run.
“Bennett Church was absolutely outstanding at first base for us in that first game,” Worster said. “He probably saved three to four errors by our infielders collectively. Those were all huge plays by him. He really picked us up defensively.”
Burlington plays at Clear Creek-Amana Wednesday and at Fort Madison Thursday.
