DENVER – The red-hot Detroit Tigers went scorched earth vs. the Colorado Rockies in their doubleheader inside Coors Field Thursday afternoon.
After winning a 8-6 extra innings slug-fest on Wednesday (May 7), Detroit came out in the first game on a mission as they throttled the Rockies 10-2 behind the arm of Casey Mize (6-1) who pitched six innings and at one time struck out 13-straight batters while securing his sixth victory of the season.
After a double play, Zach McKinstry beat the tag at first, followed by an Andy Ibáñez double to right field to take a one-run lead with two outs.
Ibáñez took third after the ball slipped out of the hands of the right fielder.
Spencer Torkelson got an RBI single to left field to help the Tigers take a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
But then the floodgates opened as Detroit scored five runs, followed by Gleyber Torres, who got a bases-loaded RBI single.
Then Torkelson hit a two-run double to the left field wall to help the Tigers take a 7-0 lead, and the rest was literally history.
Trey Sweeney and Justyn-Henry Malloy had RBI singles in the third inning, with one of the runs coming in comical fashion to bring home Javier Báez for the eighth run of the game.
Detroit went up 9-0 early and eventually went on to win the first game of the doubleheader 10-2.
Torkelson finished the first game with three RBI, and Ibáñez had two hits and two RBI as the Tigers went on to win their sixth out of their last seven games to stay atop the American League.

Game two of the doubleheader was more of the same as Keider Montero, making his first start in the majors since April 16, looked good through eight innings on the mound.
The Tigers’ bats stayed hot, and Colt Keith hit a home run. Torkelson had three RBIs, and Brewer Kicklen singled for his first career hit in the 11-1 victory.
With the victory, Detroit swept the Rockies and improved to 25-13 on the season, 12-10 on the road, and 7-3 on their 10-game road trip. They scored 79 total runs, which was the second-highest run total in franchise history.
Thursday was also the first time in franchise history that the Tigers had won by eight or more runs in the doubleheader since Aug. 30, 1953.
Prior to the Tigers, the last Major League Baseball team to achieve such success was the Houston Astros on Aug. 11, 2016.
The Tigers also scored 29 runs combined in 24 hours, counting game one of the three-game series.
Look for the historically en fuego Tigers to keep the good times rolling as Tarik Skubal will open a three-game series against the Texas Rangers Friday (May 9) inside Comerica Park.
