Wednesday notes…

BREAK THAT STREAK: The Cubs have not lost more than three consecutive games in nearly a year, since June 23-26 of last season, when they were beaten at home by the Mets, then dropped three games at San Francisco. Their current three-game skid is their sixth since then. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)

LEADS AND DEFICITS: The Cubs have erased 42 deficits this season in 35 different games. They are 21-14 in those games, including three straight losses. They have blown 33 leads in 29 different games. They are 15-14 in those games, including three straight losses. Both losing streaks came in the same three games: last Thursday at home vs. the Brewers, then Friday at home vs. the Mariners and last night at St. Louis. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)

THIS REALLY NEEDS TO STOP: The Cubs have allowed 20 home runs over their last six games, tied with the Orioles for the most over a six-game span this season. That also tied their club record for home runs over a six-game span with the 1956 squad, which surrendered 20 from Game 2 of a DH on May 27-31, 1956.

THE NICO FILES: Nico Hoerner’s 3-for-4 game Tuesday extended his on-base streak to 10 games, in which he is batting .361/.378/.472 (13-for-36) with a double, a home run and five runs scored.

Here are today’s particulars.

The Cubs lineup was not available at posting time. Please check BCB social media for the Cubs lineup.

Matthew Boyd is having a terrific year.

He left the game against the Mariners last Friday after making this spectacular catch [VIDEO].

There was said to be a bruise on Boyd’s shoulder after that, but he received treatment and is going on regular rest today.

Boyd’s last 2024 start was against the Cardinals in St. Louis, Sept. 24. He allowed two runs in four innings, with 88 pitches. Hopefully, today is better than that.

Erick Fedde is having a good year. He has allowed three or fewer run in 13 of his 15 starts.

He faced the Cubs twice last year, once with the White Sox and then in his first start after he was traded to the Cardinals. Overall vs. the Cubs last year: 7.20 ERA, 1.200 WHIP, a home run by Michael Busch. Hopefully the Cubs can hit him tonight.
