The Colorado Rockies fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-7 last night mostly due to six unearned runs in the fourth inning, but they clawed their way back in the later innings to put themselves with two runs of the kings of the NL West. Unfortunately, they were not able to pull themselves completely out and still lost the game.
Tonight the Rockies take on the Dodgers once more for the second of two against the team in blue. The Rockies look to snap an eight game losing streak against the Dodgers and stave off another series loss.
On the mound for the Rockies is right-handed rookie Chase Dollander. His last time out about the Washington Nationals, Dollander pitched six innings while giving up two runs on six hits—including a home run. He had just two strikeouts but didn’t issue any free passes.
Dollander leads the Rockies in home runs given up among Rockies pitchers, and tonight he faces a hart-hitting Dodgers lineup for the first time in his career.
On the bump for the Dodgers is the right-handed Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a member of Los Angeles’ trio of Japanese stars. In 15 starts this season Yamamoto has a 2.76 ERA over 84 2⁄3 innings and 95 strikeouts.
Historically, the Rockies have been somewhat able to get to Yamamoto. He’s given up seven earned runs on 16 hits through 14 innings across three career starts. This will be Yamamoto’s second appearance at Coors Field.
Yamamoto boasts a huge arsenal of pitches at his disposal, though he primarily utilizes a mid-90s four seam fastball, a low-90s split finger, and a curveball with tremendous vertical drop. He can also turn to a cutter, a sinker, a slider, and a very rare sweeper.
