Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were cut off by the Columbus Clippers (Guardians), 8-7.
Jake Woodford got the afternoon start and he gave up three runs on five hits over six innings. Woodford walked two and struck out seven.
Iowa had a 6-0 lead in this game after three innings, but Woodford and the bullpen couldn’t hold it. Tom Cosgrove pitched the seventh inning without much incident, but then came out for the eighth and the wheels came off. He gave up a grand slam to C.J. Kayfus, which tied the game 7-7. Cosgrove’s final line was four runs on four hits over 1.1 innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Luke Little finished out the eighth and got the loss when he gave up an unearned run in the ninth after a throwing error by second baseman James Triantos. Little’s final line was one unearned run on one hit over 1.2 innings. Little walked one and struck out one.
Right fielder Owen Caissie gave the Cubs an early lead with a first-innings solo home runs. It was his 12th on the season. After that the Clippers didn’t give Caissie much to hit and he finished the day going 1 for 2 with four walks.
James Triantos may have been the goat for his error in the ninth, but he started out as the hero with a solo home run in the third inning, which was his first home run all year. Triantos went 2 for 5 and scored twice.
Catcher Carlos Pérez was 2 for 5 with a two-run double in the second inning.
Center fielder Kevin Alcántara was 3 for 5.
Third baseman Dixon Machado was 2 for 4 with a sacrifice fly. He scored once.
All nine hitters in the Iowa lineup had at least one hit.

Knoxville Smokies
The Knoxville Smokies were subjugated by the BIrmingham Barons (White Sox), 8-6.
Nick Dean surrendered five runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out two and walked no one.
The loss went to Brad Deppermann, who got touched for two runs on four hits over just two-thirds of an inning. He did not walk or strike anyone out.
Third baseman Pedro Ramirez got the hard half of the cycle, going 2 for 5 with a triple and a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Ramirez drove in two runs and scored three.
Second baseman Reivaj Garcia was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored. He also stole a base.
Right fielder Parker Chavers hit an RBI single in the seventh inning. He was 1 for 3 with two walks. He scored twice.

South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs creamed the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins), 4-1.
It was another strong start for Tyler Schlaffer, who dominated with seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out ten and walked three on the way to the win.
Over Schlaffer’s last five starts, he’s thrown 34 innings and has allowed just two earned runs (and only one unearned) for a 0.53 ERA. He’s struck out 35 batters and walked 12.
South Bend won despite managing just four hits. Left fielder Ivan Brethowr plated the first run of the game with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Brethowr was 1 for 4 with a stolen base.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans captured the Columbia Fireflies (Rays) in a jar, 3-0 in a game that ended after five innings because of rain.
It was a short complete game shutout for Ethan Flanagan for his first win with the Pelicans. Flanagan gave up three hits. He struck out four and walked no one.
First baseman Matt Halbach hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his fifth on the year. Halbach went 1 for 1 with a walk.
Left fielder Christian Olivo was 1 for 1 with a walk. He scored on an error in the fifth inning.
