EAST GREENWICH – They go by ‘Sushi Cats’ now, after the trucking company founded by Dave Mottola, a onetime assistant with the Wizards who now serves as their sponsor.

Though they may still be waiting on new uniforms, the West Warwick Connie Mack baseball team (aka the Sushi Cats) are officially in action as the 2025 season gets underway.

Monday saw them record their first victory, a 6-2 final over East Greenwich under sweltering conditions.

“Today was a really nice game to kind of get the kids back hitting the ball well and we had two really good pitchers step up,” said head coach Matthew Grenier.

“Our kids kept putting the ball in play and we were hitting gaps today. That was the difference.”

Starting pitcher Charlie Brown went 4.2 innings for the Cats (1-1), allowing two earned runs on six hits and four strikeouts, while Jaxson Hull held the Avengers, also 1-1, scoreless over 2.1 innings of relief to help nail down the victory.

EG jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a pair of RBI triples by Leo Emery and Alex Tullo in what would prove to be their only runs of the game.
