Elly De La Cruz talks Reds’ win over Yankees
Cincinnati Reds SS Elly De La Cruz upstaged Aaron Judge and the Yankees for the second year in a row, going 3-for-4 with a HR, 3B in Monday’s opener.
The New York Yankees‘ Jazz Chisholm was ejected during the 9th inning of their game against the Cincinnati Reds, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone had to restrain Chisholm as he confronter home-plate umpire Mark Wegner.
Chisholm appeared to argue with Wegner over a strike call on a pitch he thought was low during the top of the 9th. Fanduel Sports Network announcer John Sadak pointed out during the broadcast as Chisholm was thrown out that Wegner called low strikes outside the zone during Reds’ plate appearances as well, including one in which Elly De La Cruz should’ve walked in the 8th inning.
“He was furious at a low strike,” Sadak said of Chisholm. “I understand. He’s not wrong. But that same pitch was called a strike multiple times against the Reds, including the De La Cruz at-bat when he should have walked. So it appears that Chisholm had already been chirping as we were coming back from break, and is out of the game. … Yeah, it’s low. Same pitch was called Friedl a strike. Same pitch was called De La Cruz a strike.”
Chisholm was replaced by DJ LeMahieu. Chisholm had a pair of hits earlier in the game.
