It’s hard to believe, but the high school baseball regular season is down to about 2½ weeks remaining. The District 2 tournament begins May 15 in Classes 3A and 5A and May 16 for Classes 2A, 4A and 6A.
That means teams have about 2½ weeks to improve or solidify their seeding and gather momentum to bring into the postseason.
Here’s a look at where the district seeding stands through games played Friday and some potential matchups, based on the power rating system:
Class 6A
Hazleton Area (8-4) leads this six-team subregional with District 4 Williamsport (7-4) second. Scranton (8-5) is third, followed by Wilkes-Barre Area (9-6), Wyoming Valley West (6-9) and Delaware Valley (3-6). The top two teams receive first-round byes.
On Thursday, Hazleton Area and Wilkes-Barre Area are scheduled to meet for a second time in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 play. Scranton and Delaware Valley are scheduled to play for the second time in Lackawanna League Division I action Saturday.
Class 5A
This is setting up to be a potential showdown between Pittston Area (14-0) and Abington Heights (11-2). The Patriots handed the Comets one of their two losses this season, 6-5, on March 24.
Dallas (7-4) and North Pocono (9-4) are jockeying for the No. 3 seed. The Mountaineers, who have won four straight, still have a game remaining with Pittston Area in WVC Division 1 play May 7. The Trojans meet Abington Heights again in the Lackawanna Division I finale May 12.
Wallenpaupack (4-7) and West Scranton (4-9) round out the six-team bracket. The Buckhorns swept both meetings with the Invaders in Lackawanna Division I.
Class 4A
Mid Valley (11-3) appears to have the No. 1 seed locked up since all the other teams in the classification are .500 or worse.
Crestwood (6-6) is second and Wyoming Area (6-6) third. Then come a trio of Lackawanna League teams — Honesdale (5-8) at No. 4, Scranton Prep (3-8) at No. 5 and Valley View (3-9) at No. 6. The Cavaliers and Cougars have their second Lackawanna Division I matchup scheduled for Saturday.
Berwick (2-11) and Nanticoke Area (2-12) are vying for the No. 7 seed. The two are scheduled to play again in WVC Division 1 on May 7. Hanover Area (2-10) and Tunkhannock (0-12) round out things. Only the top eight teams will qualify.
Class 3A
Dunmore (11-2) won three straight and currently is the No. 1 seed and would get the first-round bye in the seven-team field. Riverside (7-4) is second. The Bucks and Vikings are scheduled to meet for the second time in Lackawanna Division II play Saturday.
Lake-Lehman (8-5) is third and Montrose (8-5), which won three straight and seven of eight, is fourth. Western Wayne (5-8) is fifth, Lakeland (4-9) is sixth and Carbondale Area (2-9) is seventh.
Class 2A
Holy Redeemer (10-1) may have taken a big step toward securing the No. 1 seed Friday by rallying for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Elk Lake, 3-2. The No. 2 Warriors (12-2) had an 11-game winning streak halted.
Old Forge (9-4), which had a seven-game winning streak stopped Friday with a 5-3 loss to Mid Valley, is third, but could challenge Elk Lake for the No. 2 seed the rest of the way.
Wyoming Seminary (8-5) is fourth, Lackawanna Trail (5-4) fifth and Mountain View (7-6) sixth. The Lions and Eagles are scheduled to play their second Lackawanna Division III meeting May 7.
Holy Cross (4-9) and Blue Ridge (1-10) complete the eight-team field.
Class 1A
With only three teams in the classification, Susquehanna (5-6) currently is the No. 1 seed, which would advance it to the final May 24 at PNC Field. MMI Prep (5-7) is second and would face No. 3 Forest City (1-8) in the semifinals May 19.
Semifinals for Class 3A and 5A are scheduled for May 19. Class 2A, 4A and 6A will hold their semifinals May 20.
As for the district championship games at PNC Field, Class 4A is scheduled for May 24. Class 2A and 5A are set for May 25 with Class 3A and 6A on May 26. Start times and rain dates are to be announced.
