Rainy weather shouldn’t be a factor on today as the Colorado Rockies (18-61) look to steal a win against the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers (50-31) to finish the homestand. Following Wednesday’s loss, the Rockies have lost all five games against the Dodgers this season, with a longer losing streak dating back to 2024. The Dodgers also became the first team in the National League to reach 50 wins this season and just the second team in all of baseball.
Austin Gomber (0-1, 8.38 ERA) will look to rebound after a tough start against the Arizona Diamondbacks last Friday. The lefty coughed up nine runs on 12 hits over 4 2⁄3 innings in an eventual 14-8 loss. It was just Gomber’s second start of the season, but a far cry from the brilliance he showed on the mound against the Washington Nationals in his previous start. Still, he’s had a tough time against the Dodgers in his career, owning a 5.89 ERA in 36 2⁄3 innings over nine games. Pitching to contact, particularly when it comes to fly balls, is something he’s going to have to be careful of with a potent lineup like the Dodgers.
But hey, at least Max Muncy isn’t in the starting lineup.
Future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw (3-0, 3.31 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers and is on the verge of making history, potentially in this start. Kershaw enters the game with 2,992 career strikeouts and faces a Rockies team that tends to strike out quite a bit. In his career, he owns a 3.30 ERA against Colorado with a 9.3 SO/9. Kershaw hasn’t reached eight punchouts in a game this season, but did notch seven in his first start of the year on June 8 against the St. Louis Cardinals. His last outing came against the Washington Nationals where he allowed two runs on five hits over five innings of work with four strikeouts.
Will he make history, or can the Rockies make enough contact?
