Red Sox Trade Idea Reunites Walker Buehler With Rafael Devers on Giants originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Boston Red Sox are sliding at the worst possible moment. Five consecutive losses have pushed them under .500 just as the trade deadline looms. If this slump continues, Boston may have little choice but to accept that this season is slipping away and pivot into sell mode over the next few weeks.

One name that could draw interest is starting pitcher Walker Buehler. ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel recently noted that the right-hander will have “several suitors” due to his proven success in the postseason.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer went a step further, naming eight teams that could make a play for Buehler, including the San Francisco Giants, who already brought in former Red Sox star Rafael Devers.

“There is, however, the question of which starters manager Bob Melvin can trust after Logan Webb and Robbie Ray,” wrote Rymer. “To this end, Buehler would at least bring more upside than an aged Justin Verlander and Landen Roupp, and getting to pitch regularly at the offense-killing stadium that is Oracle Park could only help him unlock it.”

Despite his talent, Buehler has not pitched like an ace this year. In 13 starts, he owns a 6.29 ERA and one of the highest walk rates in the league. Even if he were dealt to San Francisco today, there is no guarantee he would slide right into their rotation. Still, the allure is there, especially as a short-term rental with a high ceiling that could benefit from a new environment.

Both Buehler and the Red Sox could stand to gain from a trade. The pitcher would get a clean slate, and Boston, still reeling from moving on from Devers, would clear up roster spots and move forward with its focus on the future.
