LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Gem City played host to an American Legion conference doubleheader between the Cheyenne Post Six Hawks and Laramie Rangers.
The day would end in a split, with the Hawks taking game one 6-4 and the Rangers winning game two 13-3 in just 5 innings.
For the first game, it would start as a pitchers dual between Alex Vines for Cheyenne and Larsen Wesnitzer for the Rangers. Through just 3 innings, Vines would strike out two batters, while Wesnitzer would only let up a single in the 3rd.
Kayden Tafoya would break it open come the 4th, finding contact and sending the ball to shallow right field and driving in Nolan Gorman from third base. Next batter up, Reid Horton sends the ball just past the shortstop to find open space and score another, taking a 2-0 lead.
However, Laramie would respond with Sam Hoyt going straight out to center field for an RBI single. Then a sacrifice-fly by TR Richardson ties the game up at 2.
Diego Herrera would come to the plate and give the Rangers their first lead of the game with a line drive to right field scoring one on his single. Laramie leads 3-2.
Going to the 5th inning, back-to-back walks sets up Gorman with a runner in scoring position. He would find the contact he wanted off the fastball and go to deep right field, driving both runners in while he ends up at second base. Hawks take back the lead 4-3.
They would extend it to 5-3 with a ground out fielder’s choice, allowing Gorman to make it home.
Laramie found some action in the bottom of the inning as Trace Looney led off the inning with a standup triple and a Kaige Schriner sacrifice-fly makes it 5-4.
However, the Hawks would close it out with one more run the 6th, a Cooper Hassler bunt goes perfect and Mason Maggard would score.
Cheyenne gets the win in game one 6-4.
“It was really just executing and knowing your situations and getting the job done whenever we needed it to happen,” Gorman said. “We had runners in scoring position and we just capitalized on that and I think that’s what won us the ball game.
The Rangers wouldn’t take the loss lightly, in game two, the Hawks would take a 3-1 lead through the 1st inning, but Laramie stormed back.
Five runs in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, another in the 4th and 4 more in the 5th gave the Rangers the run rule win after just five innings.
Herrera led the way for Laramie with two hits including a grand slam home run to close the game out.
