BOSTON — The Red Sox will be without one of their touted rookies Friday, and perhaps for their entire weekend series against Toronto at Fenway Park.
Boston placed infielder Marcelo Mayer on the bereavement list and recalled Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester, according to an announcement from the team. It’s unclear how long Mayer will be out, though the maximum bereavement leave length is three days. Sogard is starting at third base Friday; he, Nate Eaton and Abraham Toro are the candidates to man third base until Mayer returns. David Hamilton is starting at second base Friday; Mayer played that position in Boston’s two last games with left-handed starters pitching for the Angels.
Sogard, who debuted in the big leagues last year, has hit .245 (12-for-49) with eight runs scored in 14 games for Boston this season, making 11 starts at first base and one at third base. Mayer, who debuted last month after Alex Bregman went on the injured list due to a quad strain, has hit.208 (16-for-77) with three doubles, one triple, and four home runs in 27 games for Boston.
