NEW LONDON — Jaci Hawk doubled down in the batter’s box to hit Super Conference South Division foe New London with a 17-4 loss by the No. 14 Class 3A Central Lee Hawks Thursday.
Hawk’s double in the second inning scored two runs and her double in the fourth inning scored three.
Marie Young’s RBI-single and Jalyn Hawk’s RBI-double gave Central Lee a2-0 first inning lead.
The second inning saw Carlee Pezley match Jaci Hawk. Their doubles added three runs for a 5-0 lead. The Tigers scored once in the bottom of the second and twice in the third inning to get within 5-3.
Marie Young hit a three-run triple during the Hawks’ seven-run fourth inning.
Olivia Day was 2-for-4 and added to the doubles total in the fourth inning with her sixth two-bagger this season.
Sandoval hit her sixth home run this season to lead off the five-run fifth inning. Jalyn Hawk hit her first home run this season two batters later.
The Hawks have 51 doubles this season, third in Class 3A. Young leads the team with 10. Sandoval has eight.
The Tigers tried to rally and scored a run in the fifth off Rayleigh Burden, who threw the last two innings for the Hawks with three hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
Elaina Barlow pitched the first three innings and gave up five hits, three runs, buyt only two earned, two walks and struck out two.
Barlow is fourth in Class 3A in earned run average at 1.14.
Central Lee is 19-4, 12-0 in the South. The Hawks have four games at the University of Iowa over the weekend. They play two games Friday (versus West Liberty and West Des Moines Valley) and two Saturday (Bettendorf and Davenport North)
