CLEVELAND, Ohio — Guardians third baseman José Ramírez has changed his mind.
Before Friday night’s game against the Cardinals, Ramírez told cleveland.com that Toronto right-hander Kevin Gausman hit him intentionally with a 95-mph fastball in the fourth inning Thursday at Progressive Field.
After the game, a 6-0 loss to the Blue Jays, Ramírez said he didn’t think Gausman had hit him intentionally because the Guardians didn’t intentionally hit Toronto star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the third inning.
While X-rays on Ramírez’s bruised right elbow were negative, he was not in the Guardians’ lineup Friday. The Guardians played their 80th game Friday, and Ramírez has appeared in 77 of them.
Guerrero was not in Toronto’s original starting lineup against Boston on Friday, but was added later on.
“I was surprised he hit me because we weren’t throwing at Guerrero,” said Ramírez on Friday. “We were just trying to throw strikes to Guerrero.
“But he threw at me. Everyone knows that. It’s part of the game.”
Ramirez added, “The only reason I didn’t charge the mound was because I couldn’t move my right arm.”
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Ramírez is day to day.
“He won’t be in there tonight,” said Vogt. “We’re going day to day with him. Hopefully, he’ll back tomorrow.”
Ramírez said he’ll be back in the lineup Saturday.
Vogt never had a doubt that the Blue Jays retaliated against Ramírez after Guerrero was hit twice in the three-game series.
“We knew they were going to hit José,” said Vogt after Thursday’s game. “We knew it was coming, which is part of the game.”
An agitated Vogt, however, came on the field in the fifth inning and yelled at Toronto’s manager John Schneider as plate umpire Tom Hanahan stayed in close contact with him.
“All I was saying (to Schneider) was hit him in the hip. I’ve played this game a long time. I’ve been around this game a long time. If you’re going to hit someone on purpose, hit them in the hip not the arm.”
Jakob Junis and Tanner Bibee were the pitchers who hit Guerrero. Bibee hit Guerrero on Thursday. Said Bibee, “He’s one of best hitters in the big leagues. I threw him a sinker in, just like Junis did Wednesday. It just ran in.
“When you make $500 million dollars, you’re not going to be able to lean out over the plate (and risk getting hit by pitches). It just is what it is. I wasn’t trying to hit him.”
In April, the Blue Jays signed Guerrero to a 14-year $500 million extension.
