New York Post | Greg Joyce ($): You’re never quite sure what to make of a guy that a team says has good clubhouse presence. For the Yankees in recent years though, it does seem to be a part of why they decide to sign certain players over others. Both Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole have combined excellent on-field production with pseudo-coaching roles, and it appears Max Fried is in the same mold. The lefty has been a particular help to Clarke Schmidt, quietly establishing himself as one of the most consistent starters in baseball. Schmidt himself credits Fried with changing his own approach and philosophy of pitching, making it about more than just the young starter’s pure stuff.

The Athletic | Chris Kirschner ($): Marcus Stroman has struggled in his rehab outings, with a 6.97 ERA in three Double-A starts. This looms large when Ryan Yarbrough’s injury took another hit to the Yankees’ starting pitching depth, but it did raise the question if Cam Schlittler, who features five plus pitches and a 1.69 ERA at Triple-A Scranton, should be the guy to fill this gap instead.

Ultimately, the Yankees did elect to go with Stroman for Sunday, which Aaron Boone revealed in the Friday night postgame. So hopefully they at least bring the offense.

Marcus Stroman will start Sunday vs. A’s, Aaron Boone said.

MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Spencer Jones is just one phone call away. The very big Yankee prospect was promoted to Triple-A Scranton yesterday after posting the second-best OPS (.983) in the Double-A Eastern League. Jones still strikes out quite a lot — a full third of his Somerset plate appearances — and that will be what determines how long he stays in the minors, and how far he’ll go in the majors. For what it’s worth, Jones did go deep in his first AB as a RailRider.

MLB Trade Rumors | Darragh McDonald: I’m not ready to say goodbye to Ron Washington just yet, but we may be about to. The Angels manager will remain on medical leave for the remainder of the season, which means it’s at least possible his final game as an MLB skipper came against the Yankees on June 19th. Wash is one of the best candidates to be this generations “Mr. Baseball,” and I hope whatever he’s dealing with is resolved quickly and positively.
