The New York State Sportswriters Association released its All-State listings for softball and ranked at the very top of the Class C All-State teams is the Player of the Year: Bloomfield’s Ashlyn Wright.

Wright was dominant all season long for the Bombers. From the season opener against Mynderse Academy to the 11-0 shutout win over Tuckahoe in the state championship, Wright was near unhittable.

In 127 innings of work this season, she went 18-0, allowing just 36 hits, 15 runs and six earned runs. She walked 24 batters and struck out 251 and ended her season with a minuscule earned run average of 0.33.

At the plate, the West Point commit had a batting average of .449 in 82 plate appearances with 31 hits, 40 RBIs, 11 walks and just two strikeouts.

At the biggest stage of the season — the state final four — Wright took the mound and earned back-to-back shutouts: 4-0 over Section IV’s Deposit/Hancock and then threw a complete-game 11-0 shutout over Tuckahoe.

Against Tuckahoe, she allowed one hit and one walk while striking out 12 batters. Across both the semifinals and finals, Wright rang up 20 strikeouts.

At the plate in the state title game, Wright went 4-for-5 with a double and five runs batted in. Following a May 3 loss to Class AA’s Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, the Bombers won 17 straight games.

Wright was tremendous all season long, but she had plenty of talent around her as well, and two teammates landed spots on the All-State First-Team: junior Calla McCombs and freshman Sydney Falsone.

McCombs was a big problem for opponents from the plate, hitting for an average of .409 in 66 at bats with 28 runs scored, 27 hits, 17 RBIs and seven triples. Perhaps more impressive was McCombs’ defense. The junior catcher ended with a fielding percentage of 99.6% with 220 putouts, four assists and just one error. Runners didn’t take many chances against her, as she threw out two of the three stolen base attempts. In the state championship, McCombs went 12-for-12 in putouts.

As for the freshman in Falsone, she was a nightmare for opposing pitchers. She batted for an average of .564 this season in 74 plate appearances and 55 at bats, getting 31 hits, scoring 38 runs and 13 RBIs and two home runs. In the championship game against Tuckahoe, Falsone went 3-for-3 with four runs, two RBIs and a triple.

Senior right fielder Brianna Leitten earned on a spot on the All-State Second-Team to round out Bloomfield’s representation for Class C.

Leitten batted .479 at the plate this season in 79 plate appearances and 71 at bats. She scored 24 runs, got 34 hits, drove in 29 runs and hit three home runs. Against Tuckahoe, she went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

As a team, Bloomfield batted .384 with 189 runs batted in, 248 hits and 224 runs. Their team earned run averaged was 0.55.

Emma Thayer of Newark was the only other Finger Lakes player to land on an All-State team, as she was named Fifth-Team All-State in Class B for the Reds.
