The Dodgers and Marlins seemingly played a few different games on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. Though it took longer than they would have liked, the Dodgers won the opener 7-6 in the 10th inning for their third victory in a row and third walk-off win of the season.
Tommy Edman didn’t start on Monday — his first rest of the season — but he did end it, hitting a two-run single to right fieldoff Marlins right-hander Ronny Henriquez for the game-winner.
Michael Conforto was the free runner to open the 10th and reigning National League player of the week Andy Pages walked. Kiké Hernández delivered his second sacrifice bunt in the last eight seasons to put both into scoring position for Edman, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.
Jesús Sánchez doubled home the free runner with two outs in the 10th inning against Kirby Yates to bring home the go-ahead run for Miami, who once trailed 5-0 in this game.
Runs came for the Dodgers in four of the first five innings. Teoscar Hernández provided what looked like some breathing room with a fifth-inning drive that bounced off the top of the wall and into the left field pavilion for a two-run shot. One day after Hernández hit his 200th career home run, he hit No. 201 on Monday, giving him four home runs in his last five games, and three games in a row with a long ball.
Hernández is the first Dodger this season to homer in three straight games.
Dustin May was working on a nice bounce-back after last week’s clunker at Wrigley Field, holding Miami scoreless until the sixth inning. But he allowed two singles and a walk for a run in the sixth inning, and left with one out.
May allowed four balls with an exit velocity over 100 mph in the first two innings but escaped unscathed thanks in part to inducing timely ground balls. Two of hardest-hit balls after the second inning were both beaten into the ground and went for double plays, two of his six groundouts on the night.
Anthony Banda walked his first batter to load the bases and then allowed a pinch-hit grand slam to Dane Myers to tie the game at 5-5.
Three of those runs were charged to May, who walked three batters for the fourth time in five starts this season and has a 10.5-percent walk rate. Prior to May’s first Tommy John surgery in 2021, May walked three batters just once in 19 starts and had a 5.9-percent walk rate. Since then he’s walked at least three batters in nine of 20 starts with a 9.8-percent walk rate.
Notes
Hernández’s career-high home run streak is four games, from August 14-18, 2021 while with the Blue Jays. He also had three-game homer streaks from September 22-24, 2017 and September 27-28, 2019 with Toronto, and again last June 8-11 with the Dodgers.
Miguel Rojas, who started at second base, got a season-high three hits, including a double. He has eight hits in his last 19 at-bats (.421), dating back to April 8.
Myers hit the 13th pinch-hit grand slam in Dodger Stadium history, and the first since J.D. Davis for San Francisco on June 17, 2023. Five of the pinch-hit slams were hit by Dodgers, with the last hit by Manny RamÃrez on his bobblehead night against the Reds on July 22, 2009.
