Woof.
The Mets lost their third straight game, getting swept by the lowly Pirates and losing 12-1. The Mets were outscored 30-4 in this three game series and have never looked worse in 2025.
Frankie Montas had an atrocious second start as a Met, going just four innings while giving up six earned runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five and giving up two home runs. Both of those home runs, including one to old friend Tommy Pham, happened in the first inning, and before the Mets came to bat, they were in a 5-0 deficit. A sacrifice fly by Andrew McCutchen in the second would end the scoring against Montas, who managed to keep Pittsburgh off the board in the third and fourth.
He was relieved by new old friend Dicky Richard Lovelady, who was pressed into innings eating service today. In the fifth, Loveland gave up a home run to Bryan Reynolds and an RBI single to Pham, but Lovelady limited the damage and kept the Pirates off the board in the sixth.
Dedniel Nuñez was next up for the Mets, an he served up an absolute meatball to Oneil Cruz which is likely landing somewhere near Market Square right now. It was now 10-1 Pittsburgh.
Things got weird(er) in the bottom of the eighth, when Travis Jankowski took over pitching for the Mets. Things went better than you’d have expected them to, with only two runs coming in to score.
The Mets’ sole run of the day came off the bat of Luis Torrens, who cracked a solo home run in the fifth inning, knocking out Pirates starter Mike Burrows. Aside from Torrens, only Jeff McNeil reached base more than once in today’s loss.
Blissfully, the Mets are off tomorrow before beginning a series with the Brewers at home on Tuesday.
