Aidan Miller doubled twice and Carson DeMartini knocked in two runs as the Reading Fightin Phils defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3 on Sunday to take the six-game series, 4-2.
The Fightin Phils (29-44) struck first in the top of the first inning when Miller hit the first pitch of the game for a double and went to third on a flyout by DeMartini. Jose Rodriguez singled to score Miller.
Reading starting pitcher Jean Cabrera’s (3-4) went five innings, striking out three, and allowing just two hits and one earned run to get the win.
Reading opened a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning by scoring four runs.
The scoring began with an RBI double from Dyan Campbell which scored Felix Reyes, who walked then stole second base.
A throwing error by catcher Onil Perez during a pickoff attempt allowed Campbell to get to third who then scored on a single from Alex Binelas.
Miller followed with a double, putting Binelas at third. DeMartini topped off the scoring with a two-run single.
Richmond (23-50) closed in on Reading’s lead slightly in the bottom of the fifth inning. The bases were loaded for the Flying Squirrels after Justin Wishkoski was hit by a pitch and Thomas Gavello and Vaun Brown each followed with a single. Aeverson Arteaga grounded out which allowed Wishkoski to score, making the score 5-1.
The Flying Squirrels continued to chip away at the Fightin Phils’ lead in the bottom of the sixth. A pitching change brought out John McMillon, as Cabrera finished up for the day.
Richmond had runners on first and second when Perez doubled, scoring both runners to make it 5-3.
Andrew Walling and Andrew Bechtold shut down Richmond over the last three innings with Bechtold getting the save.
The Fightin Phils return home from Tuesday through Thursday against the Somerset Patriots, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
