With the 2025 MLB Draft just two weeks away, it’s mock draft season. The Chicago Cubs have been predicted to go after a few different names with the No. 17 overall pick in the first round of this year’s draft.

CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa recently released his mock draft with no surprise at No. 1 overall, as he predicts the Washington Nationals will select LSU pitcher Kade Anderson.
Down at pick No. 17, Axisa has the Cubs drafting Arkansas shortstop Wehiwa Aloy. This is the second mock draft in a matter of days with the Cubs drafting Aloy, as Bleacher Report predicted.
Aloy had a sensational season for the Razorbacks, hitting .350 with a 1.107 OPS. The shortstop added 21 home runs and 68 RBI, both being career-highs. Aloy and the Razorbacks went to the 2025 College World Series and came one game away from playing for the title this year.

“Aloy is sort of the opposite of Matt Shaw, Chicago’s 2023 first rounder, in that he stands out more for his raw power than his ability to control the strike zone,” Axisa wrote.
“The Cubs have been connected to just about every college hitter who figures to go in this range (Houston, LaViolette, Summerhill, Gavin Kilen, etc.) and no one in that group would surprise me as the pick here.”

To Axisa’s point, Aloy struck out 64 times compared to his 34 walks drawn last season. But his strong defense at shortstop and power at the plate are hard to overlook.
The Cubs currently have Dansby Swanson at shortstop, in the third year of a seven-year contract that doesn’t expire until the end of 2029.

With the Cubs’ offensive surge in 2025, they’ll likely go back to the well in this year’s draft with another offensive weapon for the future.
