Today’s pitching matchup
Guardians’ Gavin Williams (2-2, 5.06 ERA) vs. Phillies Aaron Nola (1-5, 4.61 ERA)
Williams has shown flashes but has struggled with consistency in his third MLB season. In his last outing against the Blue Jays, he walked five and struck out nine in just four innings. It was the fifth time this year he’s failed to complete five frames.
Nola’s 1–5 record is misleading as the Phillies have averaged fewer than three runs in his starts. Now in his 11th season with Philadelphia, the right-hander continues to pound the strike zone, issuing just 13 walks while striking out 45 over 41 innings.
As a staff, the Phillies allow the fewest walks in the NL (2.9 per game) and boast a team ERA of 3.87, good for top 10 in the league.
