Red Sox Trade Idea Targets Diamondbacks’ 49 Home Run Slugger originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Boston Red Sox are still feeling the impact after trading away Rafael Devers. Since the deal, Boston has lost eight of their 12 games, and their offense has lacked any punch.

Boston have been held to fewer than four runs in eight of those games and, excluding a 15-run outburst against the Toronto Blue Jays, are averaging just 2.8 runs per game during that span. While Boston awaits third baseman Alex Bregman’s return from the injured list, their postseason hopes are fading with the trade deadline fast approaching.

Sitting at 41-44, eight games back of the AL East lead, and three games behind the final Wild Card spot, the Red Sox need to make a change. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow vowed the team would improve after shipping Devers across the country, but that has not happened.

However, the trade deadline could be an opportunity for Breslow to kick things into high gear and acquire a piece to push Boston closer to a postseason contender.

Arizona Diamondbacks’ slugger Eugenio Suárez is a name rumored to be on the move, and R.J Anderson of CBS Sports believes the Red Sox are a prime trade destination.

“Suárez has authored some mighty good offensive seasons throughout his career, making it all the more notable that he’s on pace for a career-high OPS+. That statistic is fueled by the fact he’s already recorded multiple 10-homer months, including as part of a blistering June,” Anderson wrote.

Arizona has not indicated a readiness to give up on the season. But if they keep sliding in the NL standings, moving Suárez in the final year of his contract could become unavoidable.

The former All-Star is hitting .257/.325/.564 with 25 home runs and 68 RBI, providing Boston the powerful right-handed bat they desperately need. Suarez could slot in at third base while Bregman recovers, but once he returns, Suarez can shift to designated hitter and deepen Boston’s lineup.

Breslow lost the respect of fans this season, and to win it back, he will not make another season-altering move. Whether it be Suarez or another splashy move, Boston’s chief baseball officer has his back against the wall, and pressure is building to correct course before it is too late.
