Thankfully, this is the last Yankee game that will be played in June this year. It’s been a rough month for the team in general but really the offense in particular. The team saw itself drop from the best offense in baseball to a pedestrian 103 collective wRC+. From June 12 until today, the Bombers have accumulated an 86 wRC+. The Yankees are 13-13 in the month of June, but a six-game losing streak featuring a 30-inning scoreless streak will always make June feel like the dog days.

July won’t be any easier for the Yankees. Every series is against teams over .500 save for the Braves, who still boast plenty of talent. The month features two crucial series against the Blue Jays, including the first game of a four-game set tonight in Toronto.

Carlos Rodón will take on Max Scherzer tonight. Rodón, with a 2.92 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 101.2 innings, looks set to make his first All-Star Game as a member of the Yankees. Scherzer is making just his third start this season after being placed on the 60-day IL with a right thumb injury. He went five innings and gave up three earned runs on 75 pitches. Don’t expect Scherzer to be pitching a complete game as Toronto will look to limit his innings, but also don’t expect that he’ll be pulled automatically after an inning or two. His fastball was sitting 93 mph in his last start, so we’ll have to see if he’s sharp tonight.

The story of the series against the A’s was undoubtedly Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s sparkling performance since being reinstated from the IL. Since his return on June 3rd, he’s slashing .318/.379/.600, good for a .979 OPS. He’s showing off his power with six homers in 23 games. In his 100 games in pinstripes, he’s put together a .828 OPS and 4.2 WAR. Hopefully, he continues his current hot streak; he’s batting cleanup against Scherzer tonight.

Also of note, J.C. Escarra will start behind the plate with Austin Wells getting a rest for a second-straight game. Aaron Boone said that Wells had been undergoing tests due to a circulation issue in his left hand, which thankfully haven’t revealed any serious problems, though Boone says not to expect Wells back before Wednesday night’s game. Additionally, Bo Bichette, initially set to lead off for Toronto, was a late scratch with knee discomfort.
