The Texas Rangers scored six runs while the Baltimore Orioles scored ten runs in 11 innings.
Tonight featured another one of those patented Patrick Corbin starts where he doesn’t really seem to be pitching very well and gives up some runs and you’re thinking, “Gosh darn it, the Rangers could surely do better than Patrick Corbin, right?” but then you notice that he went six innings and allowed just three runs and it only really feels worse because three runs is like 40 runs for the 2025 Texas Rangers offense exchange rate.
Exactly one week after O’s starter Trevor Rogers held the Rangers to three hits in eight shutout innings, Texas was a little better tonight. Though they still only got three hits off of Rogers, one of them was a two-run Marcus Semien home run. The bats also drew three walks compared to zero last time against the Baltimore starter, which meant they saw less of the righty as he exited after 5 1⁄3 innings.
But then again, it’s not like the Rangers are great at hitting bullpens, either. After trailing 3-0 early, Semien’s dinger allowed Texas to finally score off Rogers and end his night, but they needed something flukish to tie things up. Cue Michael Helman, the newest Ranger.
Helman walked in the seventh, attempted to steal second base, saw an errant throw go into the outfield and just kept running. Had the Orioles’ catcher held onto the throw home, Helman likely would have been dead meat at the plate, but he dropped it and Helman slid in as the tying run, all but assuring us another terrible night of ghost runners. Curse you, Helman!
For a fourth consecutive game, we were subjected to extra baseball as the Rangers couldn’t score off multiple chances in the final regulation innings. After Baltimore scored three in the top of the tenth to make the additional proceedings seem incredibly moot, El Bombi Garcia connected for a three-run home run a half frame later to extend the game.
It was a very nice home run. Very emotional. Seemed like a big moment. Maybe this would be it. The Rally Rangers and the Hunt for Red October!
Except usually dependable Hoby Milner came in for the eleventh for a ‘pen exceptionally worn down from multiple bullpen games throughout the month and now four games of extended action in a row and immediately allowed like 87 consecutive baserunners and I just wanted to eat some dinner and go to bed at a reasonable hour but instead we had this mess for four hours.
I don’t know, maybe the Rangers will consider scoring more runs in the real portion of the game next time.
Player of the Game: Semien had three of Texas’ seven hits, including the home run that got them back in the game ahead of the extra innings farce. Alas…
Up Next: The Rangers will begin July with RHP Jacob deGrom getting another crack at no-hitting the Orioles. Meanwhile, RHP Brandon Young is scheduled for pitch for Baltimore.
The Tuesday evening first pitch from The Shed is scheduled for 7:05 pm CT and will be shown in the Rangers Sports Network.
