New Yankees Trade Idea Swaps Top-5 Prospect for All-Star Third Baseman originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

If it feels like you’ve already heard the idea of the New York Yankees acquiring Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez, you’re not alone.

It feels like years, not months, that Suárez has been linked to the Yankees. Such speculation initially began when veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu suffered a calf injury in spring training. Then came third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera’s severe ankle fracture during a May game against the Seattle Mariners.

Suárez nonetheless remains on the Diamondbacks less than a month before the trade deadline. We expect the rumors linking him to the Yankees to continue, though at least some now suggest what the Yankees would need to give up in any potential deal.

Take Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, who proposed the Yankees send pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange to the Diamondbacks for Suárez in a 1-for-1 swap.

“A deal to acquire Suárez would allow the Yankees to shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base and give them a more complete outfield,” Reuter noted, “but they will need to pay a premium given the limited alternatives for teams hunting a middle-of-the-order bat.”

Although his stats may not initially show it, Lagrange certainly qualifies as a “premium” prospect. The 22-year-old, now at Double-A Somerset, owns a 4.71 ERA and a 221-90 K-BB ratio in 156 2/3 career minor-league innings.

However, Bleacher Report lists Lagrange as the Yankees’ No. 5 prospect, even ranking ahead of outfielder Spencer Jones. Major League Baseball isn’t as bullish, ranking Lagrange as the Yankees’ No. 17 prospect as of July 1.

What we do know is that Lagrange is a lanky 6-foot-7, 195-pound pitcher with an elite fastball and the ability to rack up strikeouts. There is always a home for arms like that, even if it is in the bullpen.

Suarez owns a .257 average, 26 homers, and an NL-high 69 RBIs entering Tuesday. His .894 OPS ranks 14th among qualified hitters, and he’s already posted 2.8 bWAR for the inconsistent Diamondbacks.
