Astros GM Sends Yordan Alvarez Message on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Houston Astros’ left-handed slugger Yordan Alvarez has anchored the team’s lineup since his 2019 debut, spending seven seasons in the big leagues forming a reputation as one of baseball’s elite power hitters.

Acquired from the Dodgers in August 2016 for veteran reliever Josh Fields, Alvarez arrived in Houston as an under-the-radar international prospect.
Alvarez has blossomed since then, sweeping the 2019 AL Rookie of the Year vote, earning three All-Star selections and capturing 2021 ALCS MVP honors with a .522 batting average in the series.
In his playoff career, the 28-year-old designated hitter has a .294 batting average with 63 hits, 12 homers and 41 RBIs in 60 games. Alvarez’s postseason dominance has made him both a fan favorite and an irreplaceable force in Houston’s lineup.

In 2025, Alvarez has been on the injured list since fracturing his right hand on May 3, a setback that’s kept him sidelined for nearly two months.

Astros GM Dana Brown was asked on Monday about Alvarez’s return and provided an optimistic outlook, “If things go well, it could be next homestand. I haven’t ruled out potentially flying him to L.A. at some point this weekend. That’s an outside chance. That’s very optimistic. … I don’t think he needs much more time.”
In 2024, Alvarez dominated opposing pitching. Over 147 games, he smacked 35 home runs, drove in 86 runs, hit .308 and posted a .959 OPS—numbers that carried Houston’s offense all year.
His performance earned him a ninth-place finish in MVP voting, as the Astros secured their seventh AL West title in eight seasons.

This year, he’s hit just .210 with three home runs in 121 plate appearances across 29 games. When he returns to full health, Houston will count on him to help win another AL West title.
