It was a smart idea for the Los Angeles Dodgers to allow Luis Garcia to pitch for them.

Garcia, who has played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, and, most recently, the Dodgers, has been decent throughout his career. He owns a career 4.20 ERA and has struck out 523 hitters in 555.1 innings.
His longest stint was with the Phillies from 2013 to 2018, during which he posted a 4.12 ERA and struck out 223 hitters over 244.2 innings.
However, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ Nick Deeds, the Dodgers have designated him for assignment. Garcia is now a free agent, and there’s a possibility that a team like the Phillies could make sense for him.

“The Dodgers announced today that they’ve designated right-hander Luis García for assignment,” Deeds wrote. “His spot on the active roster will go to right-hander Noah Davis, who has been recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Garcia’s 40-man roster spot was used to activate right-hander Edgardo Henriquez from the 60-day injured list, though he was optioned to Triple-A rather than added to the big league roster.”

Depending on what the Phillies do at the trade deadline and if Garcia is still available, he could be an intriguing option to consider.
While he isn’t great, and his career numbers confirm this, there have been periods in his career when he has thrown the baseball at a high level, including 2017, when he posted a 2.65 ERA and a 163 ERA+.
