Brewers Promote Breakout Prospect In Latest Roster Shuffle originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Development isn’t always linear. That’s a lesson that Anthony Siegler has found out the hard way as his prospect status has been a rollercoaster ride since being drafted with the 23rd overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by the Yankees.

That rollercoaster ride is now finally reaching the apex as Siegler has been called up to the big leagues by the Milwaukee Brewers.
Coming out of high school, Siegler was a switch-hitting, switch-throwing catcher that could also pitch and play infield. The versatility and athleticism was very intriguing, but ultimately it couldn’t all come together for Siegler with New York. The Brewers signed him as a minor league free agent this offseason and now he’s in the big leagues.

The Brewers designated outfielder Daz Cameron for assignment to make roster room for Siegler. Siegler had been mashing in Triple-A Nashville this season, slashing .277/.416/.465 with 22 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases.

Siegler has played catcher, second base, and began learning third base a few weeks ago. His ability to pick up third base has been a huge boost to his big league chances and the Brewers clearly now feel comfortable enough with him at the position to bring him up to the big leagues.
Siegler ranked 36th on our June Top 50 Brewers prospects update. He once peaked on Baseball America’s ranks as the Yankees 4th best prospect in 2019.
The 26 year old will be making his MLB debut when he does get into a game for the Brewers. He’s had some tough seasons in the minors, dealing with injury shortened seasons and struggling with poor performance. Even with his strong showing this year, Siegler’s career minor league batting average is just .227.
He’s always had solid plate discipline, drawing a large number of walks and not striking out much, but Siegler hasn’t been able to do too much damage when he makes contact.

Perhaps the change of scenery away from the Yankees organization and getting into the Brewers system has helped him unlock the potential that he’s always had. After all, he was the 23rd pick in the 2018 Draft for a reason. He was selected just two spots after the Brewers took Brice Turang.
The Brewers also announced that reliever Rob Zastryzny was placed on the IL with a stress reaction in his ribs. Easton McGee was recalled as the fresh arm in the bullpen.
