SIGOURNEY — If the Mediapolis High School baseball team needed a confidence boost heading into postseason play next week, the Bulldogs got plenty of it Tuesday.

Class 2A’s fifth-ranked Mediapolis (23-1) scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, throttling Class 1A’s second ranked Sigourney, 12-0, in a non-conference game at Sigourney High School.

Mediapolis scored three runs in the top of the first inning and added another run in the second.

That would be all the support senior pitcher Lance Ludens needed. He pitched all six innings, allowing just four hits, walked none and struck out eight.

Mediapolis tacked on three more runs in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Catcher Payton Doty went 4-for-4 with a home run, drove in six runs and scored once.

Kyler Crow went 3-for-3 with a double, scored twice and knocked in two.

Gannon Gunn, Ludens and Max Griffin each had two hits for the Bulldogs. Gannon scored three runs, while Brock Spears scored two runs. Griffin drove in two runs.

Mediapolis traveled to play Casade inb Wednesday.

The Bulldogs host either West Liberty or Camance in a Class 2A district semifinal game at 7 p.m. July 8 at the Mediapolis Athletic Complex.
