Dodgers Prospect Dud Expected to Be Wanted During MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Once heralded as a top outfield prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ system, James Outman has stumbled during his call-ups to the majors.

With limited offensive production in the MLB but excellent numbers in Triple-A, he may be drawing interest as a possible trade piece as the Dodgers adjust their roster. That is according to Zach Pressnell at Newsweek, who still sees value in the 28-year-old.

“Outman seems to be out of a job in Los Angeles, but he’s talented enough to stick somewhere else, This is the perfect storm that should lead to the Dodgers shopping the young outfielder at the trade deadline.”

The return could be low, but Pressnell sees Outman as someone who could help bring a pitcher to the club in return.

“The Dodgers could look to trade Outman as the centerpiece of a deal for a starting pitcher. Somebody like Sandy Alcántara or Freddy Peralta could be on Los Angeles’ radar.”

The former seventh-round pick in 2022 out of Sacramento State broke out as a rookie in 2023 with a solid season, playing in 151 games. That year, he had a .248 batting average with 23 home runs, 68 walks, and 70 RBIs.

Outman has just 24 at-bats this season, hitting .125 with two homers after struggling last season (he also hit .147 across 53 games in 2024).

The potential was a flash in the pan during the 2023 MLB season, but his Triple-A numbers with the Oklahoma City Comets should be inspiring for a prospective suitor. He has consistently hit close to .279 or higher in 2022, 2024, and 2025. In just 66 games with the Comets this season, he already has 19 home runs and 66 RBIs.

Los Angeles could be leveraging Outman’s Triple-A dominance and turning it into trade value, rather than waiting for an inconsistent MLB bounce-back. At 28 and facing limited playing time, a new environment might offer the regular role he needs, while getting the Dodgers’ pitching help in return.
