BALTIMORE (WBFF) — There’s nobody in MLB’s minor league system who has emerged more recently than an Orioles flame-throwing pitching prospect, according to Baseball America.

Right-hander Esteban Mejia jumped into the scouting service’s top 100 on Wednesday, becoming Baltimore’s third top 100 prospect — catcher Samuel Basallo and corner infielder Coby Mayo are the others — and the top-ranked pitching prospect in its farm system.

Mejia is Baseball America’s No. 84 prospect, rising from an unranked spot to comfortably within the top 100. He’s posted a 2.51 ERA in just over 32 innings for the FCL Orioles this season and has struck out 41 hitters. Opponents are batting just .210 against him.

“Mejia has been the buzz of the Florida Complex League with a 100+ mph fastball and the makings of two other plus pitches. His delivery isn’t picture perfect, and he needs to refine his control, but there are few pitchers with three potentially plus pitches,” Baseball America executive editor J.J. Cooper said.
