DUBOIS — The DuBois Minor League baseball All-Stars played host to Brookville on Tuesday evening at Way Memorial Field in a must-win game for both teams, and the host jumped out to an early lead thanks to a five-run first inning, and went on to win the game 7-1.

With the victory, DuBois earns a rematch with the only remaining undefeated team, St. Marys, on Thursday. St. Marys won the first game between the two teams, in the winners’ bracket final, by a narrow 10-9 margin.

DuBois was the home team, and starting pitcher Wyatt Lee put a charge into his team by setting the side down 1-2-3, thanks to a groundout second and a pair of swinging third strikes.

Lee started and pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Krew Liddle relieved him and pitched two shutout innings to earn the win. Rory Marshall sealed the deal with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work that included four strikeouts.

After the quick first, DuBois wasted no time jumping all over Brookville, scoring five runs on four hits in the first frame, while bringing 10 hitters to the plate.

Tyson Hilliard got the ball rolling for DuBois with a liner into center field for a single, and after Liddle was hit by a pitch to put a pair on base, Emerson Reiter ripped one to deep right-center field, clearing the bases with a two-run triple for the game’s first runs.

Reiter came in to score soon after when Marshall grounded out to short for an RBI to make it 3-0, and DuBois went right back to work to add on a few more runs.

Macklin Mays sparked the second rally with a single through the left side, then Collin Roman was hit by a pitch and Holden Frederick reached on an infield single to load the bases.

With nowhere to put him, DuBois’ A.J. Guerndt managed to work a walk for an RBI, plating Mays, and Lee helped his own cause by grounding one sharply to first, where the only play was a forceout, scoring Roman to make it 5-0.

After two quick outs in the top of the second, Brookvile got its first two base runners thanks to back-to-back singles by Nolan Donlin and Smith. But Lee managed to strand them both with a ground ball to short for a force out.

Jude Bowley singled with one out for DuBois in the home half of the second, then Liddle reached on a two-out single of his own. Reiter ripped one to left field that seemed bound for the fence again, but Donlin reached up and snagged it to rob him of a hit and end the inning.

Brookville got its only run of the game in the top of the third, and it all started with a one-out walk to Jace Giles. Giles advanced on a passed ball before DuBois got the second out, then took third on a two-out passed ball.

Grayson Zimmerman followed with a single to right, plating Giles and making it 5-1 before DuBois catcher Malcolm Orcutt threw a strike to Mays covering second, catching Zimmerman stealing and ending the inning.

DuBois’ only base runner in the bottom of the third was Roman, who reached on a two-out single up the middle, and although Brookville managed a pair of singles off Liddle, on in relief, when Jack Conti and Porter Hetrick both reached with two outs, Reiter made a nice over-the-shoulder snag in shallow right field to rob Donlin of a hit and send the game to the bottom of the fourth.

Donlin made another beautiful play in left-center, robbing Guerndt of a hit to open the bottom of the frame, and Smith went on to set the side down in order, keeping it 5-1 through four full innings.

Smith worked a leadoff walk against Liddle, and after a strikeout, Marshall came on in relief. Caleb London welcomed him to the game with a single up the middle to put a pair on base, but Marshall worked out of the jam to strand both runners with a pair of strikeouts.

DuBois then used a two-out rally to add two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. It started with Hilliard singling up the middle with two outs, and Liddle followed with a single to right, putting runners on the corners.

Hilliard then scored on a passed ball with Reiter in the box, and when Reiter reached on an error after a grounder to short, Liddle scored to make it 7-1.

Marshall was set to face the top of the Brookville order in the sixth, and he retired the first two he faced quickly, with a soft grounder back to himself and a strikeout.

Aiden Rafferty gave his team one last glimmer of hope by singling through the left side of the infield, but Marshall returned to form and struck out the next hitter he faced to seal the deal for a 7-1 win.

DuBois out-hit Brookville by a narrow 9-7 margin, but used four in the first and two in the fifth to score its runs. Hilliard and Liddle were the only two players on either team to record multiple hits, as both singled twice.

DuBois will now travel to St. Marys for a 6 p.m. contest on Thursday with hopes of extending its season yet again. If DuBois wins that game, the if-necessary, winner-take-all District 10 final would be held on Monday
