Devin Williams Facing Backlash for Comments After Yankees’ Loss to Blue Jays originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The New York Yankees looked well on their way to an embarrassing loss against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday before their fate temporarily turned for the better. They fell behind 8-0 until scoring six runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth, and two in the eighth to tie the game at 9-9.

Yankees relief pitcher Devin Williams (2-3, 5.17 ERA) entered in the bottom of the eighth and struck out Andres Gimenez. However, the veteran then walked George Springer and intentionally walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr..

Alejandro Kirk subsequently flied out to move the runners over, followed by a Williams wild pitch that Springer scored on. After that, Addison Barger hit an RBI single before the frame finally ended on an Ernie Clement groundout.

New York didn’t score in the top of the ninth, and Williams earned his third loss of the season. The 30-year-old opened up about his rough night postgame, via YES Network.

“Yeah, I let Springer get away from me there,” he admitted. “Intentional walk to the next guy. Sac fly, we got two outs. Yeah, I don’t know. I thought I made some pretty solid pitches. Barger hit a pitch that was out of the zone.”

“I gotta make a better pitch there,” he said about the wild pitch to Barger. “Wasn’t the easiest one to block for Ben [Rice], so I gotta make a better pitch.”

“That’s not my decision,” he said about intentionally walking Guerrero.

Yankees fans on social media are upset with his comments.

“This man has been counting down the days to unrestricted free agency since the day he got to New York,” one person said.

“This dude is not the guy you want holding the ball in a close game whatsoever,” another said.

“Feels like Devin still hates being in NY, or maybe hates playing for [Aaron] Boone.  ‘That’s not my decision’ is not a good look,” another said.

“Pinstripes aren’t for him, he doesn’t look like he wants to be here tbh,” another said.

“Can’t wait for the season to be over so he can leave,” another said. “I’m not falling for that fastball change up bs. Teams have figured him out.”
