WASHINGTON (7News) — A young, bright star in the Nationals’ lineup has slugged his way into the 2025 T-Mobile Home Run Derby.

On Thursday, outfielder James Wood announced on his social media page that he will compete in his first Derby. The honor comes during his first full season in the league.

Wood has hit 22 home runs for the Nationals through 86 games this season, ranking seventh in the league. Known for his power, the 6’7” lefty leads the team in homers, hits (91), RBIs (65), and OBP (.387).

The Nationals have a history of Derby champions. Former Nationals’ Juan Soto won in 2022, and Bryce Harper in 2018.

Wood becomes the third player to commit to the Derby, joining Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Jr. and Seattle’s Cal Raleigh.

The 2025 T-Mobile Home Run Derby is on Monday, July 14, at Truist Park in Atlanta. The All-Star Game will follow on July 15.
