Atlanta’s rotation in limbo as All-Star break nears

  • July 4, 2025

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Atlanta Braves open a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, marking the eighth regular season game broadcast live on Gray Media in 2025.

The Braves (39-47) are coming off a series loss to the Los Angeles Angels and have been shut out three times in their past seven games. Jurickson Profar, two games back from his 80-game PED suspension, has made his presence felt offensively and prevented the team from being shut out once again on Thursday.

The All-Star break is around the corner. But first, the Braves have a date with Baltimore, playing three games starting Friday before going on the road to play the Athletics in Sacramento and the Cardinals in St. Louis to wrap up the first half of the season.

Braves-Orioles pitching probables

Friday, 7:15 p.m. – Spencer Strider (3-6, 3.86 ERA) vs. Charlie Morton (4-7, 5.63 ERA)

Saturday, 4:10 p.m. – TBD vs. Dean Kremer (7-7, 4.27 ERA)

Sunday, 11:35 a.m. – Grant Holmes (4-7, 3.47 ERA) vs. Trevor Rogers (1-0, 2.05 ERA)

Former Brave Charlie Morton takes the mound for Baltimore on Friday. Morton spent his rookie season with Atlanta in 2008, but he didn’t have nearly the same success that he had in his second stint with the Braves, when he pitched to a 3.34 ERA during the team’s World Series run in 2021.

Across five seasons (2008, 2021-2024), Morton pitched to a 4.09 ERA and 1.286 WHIP across 761 innings with Atlanta. He’ll face Spencer Strider, who has allowed just six runs across his last four starts (24 innings).

As for Saturday, Dean Kremer will take the mound for Baltimore. But for Atlanta? Right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach’s recent injury put the team in a difficult position regarding its rotation.

Atlanta is now without Schwellenbach (fractured elbow), Chris Sale (fractured rib), AJ Smith-Shawver (Tommy John surgery) and Reynaldo Lopez (arthroscopic shoulder surgery) due to injury, leaving it with a four-man rotation as it tries to fill Schwellenbach’s void for the time being.

With that being said, it’s very possible Atlanta goes with a bullpen game Saturday.

Braves and Orioles hitters to watch

Braves: Outfielder Jurickson Profar on Wednesday was reinstated from the restricted list after serving an 80-game suspension. What happened in his first game back? He launched a ball into the Chop House in right field. Profar will be the team’s regular left fielder going forward, but the suspension makes him ineligible for the postseason.

Orioles: Ryan O’Hearn was elected to his first All-Star game this year as the starting designated hitter for the American League. In 73 games, O’Hearn is slashing .294/.381/.472 with 11 home runs and 30 RBIs. Gunnar Henderson is also fun to watch. He leads the team in hits (84) and has a .794 OPS in 79 games this season.
