On Thursday night, Cubs catcher Reese McGuire made a play that almost doesn’t make sense.
On its surface, what happened was that on a pitch in the dirt, Guardians runner Kyle Manzardo tried to go from first to second, and McGuire threw him out.

But this wasn’t your ordinary ball in the dirt.

That baseball actually ended up lodged, temporarily, in McGuire’s chest protector.
Somehow, in the moment, he figured it out quickly enough to snatch it out, then from a slightly odd throwing position, deliver a strike to Dansby Swanson covering second base for the tag out.
It’s a remarkable play by the Cubs’ backup catcher, one that you could watch over and over and not get tired of.

And it might be a long time before you see another catcher make a stop and throw-out quite like this one.
