USD has promoted assistant coach Grady Miller to pitching coach.
Miller takes over for Matt Florer, who was hired this week as an assistant coach at Oregon after seven seasons as USD’s pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
Miller, who pitched for the Toreros from 2019-21, served the past two years on the Toreros’ staff as an assistant coach working with the pitchers.
“His expertise was a key part of our pitching and championship success over the last two seasons,” USD coach Brock Ungricht said in a statement, “and I am confident that he will continue to elevate our standard on the mound in his new role.”
Miller grew up in Washington and played at the University of Portland and Central Arizona College before transferring to USD. He spent a year as a graduate assistant on former USD coach Rich Hill’s staff at Hawaii in 2022 before joining the Toreros’ staff.
Miller will be challenged to find replacements for the pitching staff’s top two starters. Right-handers Cal Scolari (5-3, 4.22 ERA, 77 SO), the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, and Logan Reddemann (3-1, 2.29 ERA, 53 SO) both entered the transfer portal.
“Grady possesses an advanced pitching acumen, and understands at the highest level what it means to be a Torero, dating back to his time as a USD student-athlete,” Ungricht said. “He has forged meaningful relationships with our current players that will provide continuity for our program.”
USD also promoted Josh Nicoloff to assistant coach. Nicoloff served the past year as USD’s director of baseball operations.
Nicoloff played at both Columbia University and Kansas State and graduated from Columbia in 2021. He grew up in Orange County, graduating from Santa Margarita Catholic High School.
