The Red Sox took the first game of the series 11-2. Even with the 11:05 a.m. start on the road, the Boston bats and starter Lucas Giolito seemed well rested and eager to celebrate the Fourth of July on Friday in the nation’s capital.

A 7-run fifth inning all but sealed the game for the Red Sox who held a 9-0 lead after the frame. In the eighth, shortstop Trevor Story capped off his four-hit, 4 RBI contest with a 2-run home run, his 13th dinger of the season.

Friday’s win has Boston at 44-45 on the season while the Nationals fell to 37-51. Red Sox starter Walker Buehler will look to get right on Saturday as he’s matched up against Washington’s Mitchell Parker.

Nationals slugger James Wood joins Ronald Acuña Jr., Cal Raleigh as participants in Home Run Derby

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood became the third player to announce he will take part in the Home Run Derby.

The derby will be held on July 14, the night before the All-Star Game, at Truist Park in Atlanta. Wood joins Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 33 homers, in the contest.

Wood went 5 for 5 with his 23rd home run in Thursday night’s 11-7 win over the Detroit Tigers.

He’s the third Nationals player to take part in the Home Run Derby, joining Juan Soto (2022) and Bryce Harper (2013 and ’18).

“I mean it’s cool. It’s definitely special,” Wood said of his selection. “It’s something not a lot of guys get to do so I’m just super honored and excited for it.”

The 22-year-old Wood has 12 homers that have been hit harder than 110 mph. It’s the second most in the league behind Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani’s 13. Wood also has four that have gone longer than 445 feet.

Wood was acquired from San Diego in August 2022 as part of the blockbuster deal that sent Soto to the Padres.

Nationals place pitcher Trevor Williams on the injured list with an elbow sprain

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals placed starter Trevor Williams on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain Friday, two days after the veteran right-hander gave up a season-high seven runs in an 11-2 loss to Detroit.

Williams is 3-10 with a 6.21 ERA in 17 starts this season and is tied for second in the National League in losses. He agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal after going 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA last year despite being limited to 13 starts because of strained muscle in his throwing arm.

Washington recalled right-hander Ryan Loutos from Triple-A Rochester, a day after demoting him. Loutos is 1-0 with a 13.50 ERA in eight games with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Nationals this season.

The Nationals also activated catcher Keibert Ruiz from the injured list and optioned catcher Drew Millas to Rochester. Ruiz had been sidelined with a concussion after getting hit by a foul ball on June 23. Millas hit .143 with an RBI in three games.
