The injury to Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy on Wednesday night was truly a scary scene.

On a steal attempt from Chicago White Sox outfielder Michael A. Taylor, Muncy (in very athletic form) leapt up to haul in a Will Smith throw. As he came down to make the tag on Taylor, the runner slid head first into Muncy’s leg causing it to move in an unnatural way.

Muncy crumpled to the ground immediately clutching his knee, and was ultimately helped off the field.

The injury somewhat put a damper on Clayton Kershaw’s monumental achievement in earning his 3,000th career strikeout. As the team waited to hear the news on Muncy’s status, an update ultimately did come on Thursday.

Muncy was placed on the IL with what’s being billed as a bone bruise. Imaging showed that Muncy suffered no ligament damage, and that he’s expected to miss around six weeks with the injury.

This news is the best-case scenario for the team and player. Many believed at first glance that Muncy suffered a very serious knee injury. Based on his reaction coupled with the general toughness he has demonstrated for years. the fear was that he’d be lost for the rest of the year and perhaps beyond that.

Now as it stands, Muncy can work his way back and presumably be with the ballclub in September for the postseason ramp-up period.

The timing of this injury in a way is very fortuitous, but it’s also a shame for Muncy. After a very slow start to the year, the third baseman has been making a push for an All-Star selection. He’s sporting a stellar .832 OPS on the year to go along with 13 homers and 55 RBIs.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Dodgers cobble together the position presumably with a host of players. Kiké Hernandez and Miguel Rojas can both provide cover at the spot. With neither of them being left-handed bats, Tommy Edman likely will get time at third. This would then enable Hyeseong Kim to get consistent time at second base.
