Rangers 8, Mariners 1
The thing about games like this is that it kind of makes me even madder than I was.
You can get hits! You can score runs! Why haven’t you been doing that more often!
This was only the second time in their last ten games that the Rangers have scored more than two runs. The other time in that stretch, of course, was in Jacob deGrom’s last start, when they scored 15 against whatever the team playing in Sacramento is called.
It is also only the sixth time this season the Rangers have scored more than five runs. Its the third time they’ve scored at least eight runs, and the first time they’ve done so against a team other than that team playing in Sacramento.
Jacob deGrom …
Okay, that’s how far into the Thoughts post I was when I saw the news about Ecker and Leody. It kind of has thrown me off my rhythm.
I mean, there was a game and I have thoughts about it, but that’s two really big pieces of news that overshadow this particular game.
Well, I guess I should plow right through it, right?
deGrom…what was I saying about him? Oh, yeah. He wasn’t actually dominant deGrom in this game. Just three strikeouts, along with two walks in five innings. And he needed 89 pitches to go those five innings because he wasn’t missing bats at his usual clip. Just 11 swings and misses on 89 pitches, and just 4 whiffs on his slider, which he wasn’t commanding. His slider too frequently either was too far out of the zone to elicit a swing, or was in the zone where it could readily be made contact with. The M’s had eight balls in play and five fouls on 17 swings against the slider.
deGrom also gave up 11 foul balls on his fastball on 20 swings, but only three balls put in play. So there’s that.
Jacob Degrom’s ERA as a Ranger is now 2.51, which is lower than the 2.52 ERA he has as a New York Met.
Anyway, the offense scored runs and got hits. 12 hits, to be exact, though only one extra base hit, a Josh Smith triple. Smith was 4 for 5 from the leadoff spot.
Texas drew four walks as well, so that was good.
Every Ranger starter had a hit except for Joc Pederson, who was 0 for 4 and saw his average drop to .094, and Blaine Crim, who was 0 for 2 with a walk and a HBP.
I had more thoughts I was going to write about but the news above has me a bit thrown. So I think I’ll stop.
Jacob deGrom reached 98.8 mph with his fastball, averaging 97.0 mph. Jacob Webb hit 93.7 mph with his fastball. Hoby Milner’s sinker topped out at 87.9 mph. Luke Jackson’s fastball maxed out at 94.8 mph.
Corey Seager had a 108.8 mph single and a 103.6 mph line out. Josh Jung had a 108.0 mph line out. Adolis Garcia had a 106.6 mph single. Josh Smith had a 103.9 mph single.
Anyway, a win. I’m going to be happy about a win.
