FORT MADISON — The Burlington and Fort Madison high school softball teams had each won one game against the other before Thursday’s Southeast Conference game at the Baxter Sports Complex.
On paper it looked as if the teams were equal. A Bloodhounds win would create identical league records of 6-6. In reality Burlington’s pitching was better.
The Grayhounds won the season series over Fort Madison with a 13-0 shutout behind Kylee Hill’s 11-strikeout, one-walk two-hitter.
“Kylee Hill has made a name for herself and the name itself is intimidating,” Fort Madison coach Kyle Doherty said. “I felt like we took ourselves out of the game before the first pitch was thrown.”
Hill helped her cause with a 2-for-3 performance in the batter’s box that included a home run.
“She’s a fantastic player, fantastic pitcher,” Doherty said.
“It helps that we are scoring runs and that makes a difference,” BHS coach Larry Heath said. “Next week could be different because Kylee won’t be with us.”
Hill plays on a travel softball team and misses BHS games.
“She had a good night and our team is more confident when she is on the mound,” Heath said.
Fort Madison’s Jordyn Marshall gave up 10 hits and 11 runs with nine walks and three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Lucia Darnell allowed two hits, two runs and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning.
“Jordyn has been hurt so with her UCL so that has limited our options,” Doherty said.
Brylie Lorence, who catches, played her third game at shortstop.
Olivia Buckner and Kylie Lumino had the two Fort Madison hits. Lumino also had an amazing catch from her catcher’s position. She located a foul pop-up behind the plate and falling but right next to the fence. She dove alongside the fence and into the dirt for the out.
“(Lumino) has had a couple of those this year where she didn’t get to it so I was glad to see her get that one,” Doherty said. “That should be a huge confidence booster for someone who is impressive behind the plate. Her I.Q. behind the plate is impressive.”
Burlington left fielder Ava Brandenburg also had an amazing catch in short left-center field.
“I don’t know how I got to it,” Bradenburg said. “I just hustled and dove. I didn’t think I was going to make it there, but I had the speed to get it.”
The ball was a blooper just out of the infield’s reach and seemingly too short and fading toward center field for the left fielder. But Brandenburg was on the dead run to get to it. She held up her glove with the ball in as she lay on the ground.
“I had to show it,” she said.
Brandenburg went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
“I try to have a good mindset when I go to the plate,” Brandenburg said. “My teammates help a lot too.”
Burlington teammate Sophie Brown was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and scored once.
“We had timely hits, nice bunts,” Heath said. “We were putting the ball in play and making them field it. It was a good team effort so I’ll take it.”
Burlington hosts Mount Pleasant for Senior Night Monday.
Fort Madison was coming off of a 15-hit game the previous night.
Fort Madison hosts Class 3A No. 9 Washington Monday in an SEC doubleheader.
“We played them really good earlier,” Doherty said of a 4-2 loss. “Our mission is to win the first one and roll that into the second one.”
