It’s been pretty clear for a while that the New York Yankees need to make a trade for a new infielder.

And lately, it’s become obvious that the acquired player should be a third baseman, allowing Jazz Chisholm to move back to second base, his preferred spot.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale provided the latest news in his Sunday notes:

“The Yankees would love to acquire D-backs third baseman Eugenio Suarez at the deadline and slide Jazz Chisholm back to second base. The Yankees, along with the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs, have also expressed interest in Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.”

Suarez is having a phenomenal season, his latest power-hitting masterpiece in a career that includes 304 home runs and counting.

He’s batting .255 with 28 homers on the season.

Suarez is currently with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are probably just far enough out of contention to consider selling. Although a hot streak by the D-Backs before the end of the month could take Suarez’s name off the trade block.

If that happens, the aforementioned Hayes would make sense. He’s a great defender at the hot corner. The son of former big leaguer Charlie Hayes, the Pirates’ third baseman has never quite developed into a great hitter, but he’d still be a useful pickup for the Yankees.

It’s definitely safe to plan on a new third baseman in the Bronx by August 1.
